New Melissa and Doug Toys for 2014

I am a major fan of Melissa and Doug. Not for the reasons you may expect: the materials, the play value, etc. Rather, many of Melissa and Doug’s products have had an amazing, positive impact on the treatment of my son’s autism. Of which I hope to share more about those products, and some new ones, in the months ahead. Yet, whether it’s my mainstream daughter or my son, the toys go back to the basics of play that any parent would appreciate.

At Toy Fair 2014, I was able to get a tour of the Melissa and Doug booth from Melissa herself. She spoke of Melissa and Doug as an opportunity for getting kids away from technology and into imagination. A mission of Melissa and Doug is to make early childhood tech free: toys without screens, plugs and batteries.

As we took a tour around the booth, there were many great products, old and new, that fit that mission to a “T”. Some of the new ones were amazing to see. Mess-free glitter, new design your own jewelry kits, new offerings in the expanded “on-the-go-line” where, instead of giving your kids your iPad to get through dinner in a restaurant, you can use one of these imaginative products like scratch art, learn to draw, or secret decoder books.

Many toys were also “low skill, high impact” so children with challenges or little learners, can feel successful at play with: decorate your own month calendar, jumbo sized weaving loom, sticker pads and more.

These were some of the new toys I specifically wanted to share. (See the image above.) The first reminds me of the “Fashion Plates” I had as a kid. I loved that thing. The ability to swap out plates to create my own outfits, then rub the drawing and use color pencils to add color to my designs. I loved the two new costumes Melissa and Doug launched for this year: beautiful and unique. Melissa and Doug’s Baby Play is a great introduction to high quality play toys, and the new Melissa and Doug puzzles were, by far, the coolest puzzles I have seen to date. Lastly, the cart that can either be a snack stand or an ice cream stand…you just have to see it to believe it. It’s an amazing addition to the food play line for which Melissa and Doug is known.

These products are rolling out throughout the year so definitely visit Melissa and Doug’s website. If you need your Melissa and Doug fix now, then check out One Kings Lane.
