ANNIE the Musical Review

“I liked seeing Mr. Warbucks and Annie arrive at the Theatre!”

annie musical review

This from a 6 year old girl who learned about ANNIE for the first time at her first ANNIE Musical and started a lifetime of memories for this beloved classic now playing at the Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theatre in Boston. My first exposure to ANNIE was at the movies when I was 10 years old and is something I still remember today. One of the winners of the ticket giveaway went with her two daughters and mother. It was three generations of women and a special ‘girls’ night out!

ANNIE plays at the Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theatre from now through Sunday, November 16, 2014, for 16 performances. On Tuesday through Saturday, there will be one performance in the evenings at 7:00 pm. But there are matinees on Thursday, November 6 at 11:00 am, Tuesday, November 11 at 2:00 pm, and Saturdays at 2:00 pm; and Sundays at 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm.

You can see more details about the Boston-based performances here.

ANNIE the Musical Review

The show was fabulous. The actors were very talented and all had wonderful voices. The sound was great and the performances were spot on. You definitely don’t have to go to Broadway in New York City to see a great musical. This traveling performance goes all out.

The lighting was bright in the theatre, which was a comfort for parents and children alike (though a bit darker in the balcony areas). This kept the fear of the dark away and enabled all to be able to read the program and follow along.

Some issues to note: Parents may have a bit of concern as the word “damn” was used frequently by Daddy Warbucks and “hell” was used in the political scene. These are not the worst of curse words, but for young children, this could be concerning to some parents. Also, at the beginning of the show, there was a thunderstorm that could be scary for some children.

Otherwise, as the one little six-year old theater goer said:

“When Miss Hannigan was crying (singing Little Girls), that was sooo funny.”
